The price moves with the date and the hotel. The UAE summer holidays and Eid are Malaysia's busiest weeks for Gulf visitors, so fares and Kuala Lumpur hotel rates rise then. A hotel in Bukit Bintang or near KLCC costs more than one further out, but saves taxi time and lets children rest between outings. Adding Singapore adds a flight and pricier hotels, so it usually raises the total more than adding Langkawi.

  • Shared or private tours: private touring costs more per person but suits families with young children or older parents
  • Children's prices depend on age, the airline's child fare and whether they share your bed or need an extra bed
  • Kids' and family discounts apply where the hotel and airline allow

02

What every Malaysia package includes (and what it does not)

Every Malaysia package we sell covers the flight, the hotel and the transfers. Most include the tours too, so you are not booking guides and tickets on arrival. Recent Malaysia packages on our site have included:

Checklist

  • 4-star hotels in Kuala Lumpur, and in Langkawi, Penang or Singapore on longer packages, with daily breakfast
  • Arrival and departure airport transfers
  • Kuala Lumpur city tour: Merdeka Square, the National Mosque, the King's Palace, the National Monument, the old railway station and a photo stop at the Petronas Twin Towers
  • Putrajaya tour with the pink-domed Putra Mosque and the Prime Minister's office at Perdana Putra
  • Genting Highlands with the cable car, and Batu Caves on the way
  • KL Tower observation deck on some packages, 276 metres above the ground
  • A professional guide on tour days

Not included unless your quote says so:

Cable car cabins of the Genting Skyway over the rainforest with hills behind at sunrise
  • Visa fees, where your passport needs a Malaysia visa
  • Lunches and dinners not named in the itinerary
  • Seat selection and meals on low-cost flights
  • Tips, personal spending, and any early check-in or late check-out

Malaysia uses the ringgit. Cards work almost everywhere in Kuala Lumpur, and ride-hailing apps are cheap and reliable for short trips. For cover against delays and medical costs, add travel insurance for your trip if your package does not include it.

Kuala Lumpur, Genting, Langkawi and Penang: where to spend your nights

Malaysia is bigger than it looks on a map, and each stop has a different feel. Most first trips spend three or four nights in Kuala Lumpur and add one more place.

  • Kuala Lumpur, 3 to 4 nights

The capital and the base for most trips. Stay in Bukit Bintang for malls and restaurants within walking distance, or near KLCC for the towers and the park. Day trips to Putrajaya, Genting and Batu Caves start here.

  • Genting Skyway cable car cabin above green forest at sunrise

Genting Highlands, day trip or 1 night

About an hour from Kuala Lumpur, at around 1,800 metres. Cool all year, with theme parks, malls and the Chin Swee temple. Most families do it as a day trip; a night lets you see it without crowds.

  • Oriental Village shops reflected in a pond below forested hills and storm clouds, Langkawi

    Langkawi, 3 nights

An hour's flight from Kuala Lumpur. Beaches, the cable car and Sky Bridge, island hopping and duty-free shopping. The calmest add-on for couples and families.

  • Penang, 2 to 3 nights

An hour's flight north of Kuala Lumpur. George Town's shophouses and street art, Penang Hill by funicular, and famous street food. Suits couples and repeat visitors.

Food is a big part of any Malaysia trip and most of it is halal. In Kuala Lumpur, try nasi lemak for breakfast, satay in the evening and roti canai at any hour, and look for the halal sign at Chinese restaurants. Malls have prayer rooms, and the National Mosque welcomes visitors outside prayer times with robes lent at the door.

Malaysia works well with children. Aquaria KLCC, the free KLCC park playground and water play area, Sunway Lagoon and the Genting theme parks fill several days, and the short flights and easy food help. See our family tours for more trips planned around school holidays.

Adding Singapore or Thailand to a Malaysia trip

Thailand adds beaches or Bangkok's temples. Here is what each adds:

  • The Singapore Flyer wheel beside the bay, with the Gardens by the Bay domes on the right

    Singapore, 3 to 4 nights

Gardens by the Bay, Marina Bay, Sentosa and Universal Studios. Clean, safe and easy with children. Hotels cost more than in Kuala Lumpur, so it is usually the shorter stay.

  • Clouded leopard resting on a branch at the Singapore Night Safari

    Singapore Night Safari

The world's first nocturnal zoo, with a tram ride and walking trails. Included on several of our Singapore and Malaysia packages.

  • Rope suspension bridge to a small island with lookout towers off Palawan Beach, Sentosa

    Sentosa Island

Reached by cable car. The Skyline Luge, beaches, Madame Tussauds and the Wings of Time evening show.

  • Longtail boats moored off a beach below a limestone cliff in Krabi, Thailand

    Thailand, 3 to 4 nights

Bangkok for temples and shopping, or Phuket and Krabi for islands. A short flight from Kuala Lumpur or Singapore.

When to go: weather, school holidays and peak fares from the UAE

Malaysia is hot and humid all year, around 30 °C in Kuala Lumpur, with short heavy showers rather than a long dry season. Genting stays cool, often in the high teens. The west coast, including Kuala Lumpur, Langkawi and Penang, is usually driest from December to February and around June to August. The east coast islands close for the monsoon from about November to February, which is why our packages use Langkawi and Penang.

Malaysia by season, for travellers from the UAE

Most of our Malaysia families travel in the UAE summer holidays, when Kuala Lumpur is busy with Gulf visitors and malls run family events. Booking six to eight weeks ahead keeps flight choice open; for Eid and August, book earlier. For the lowest fares, travel in March, May or November, outside Eid. To compare flights alone, see our flight tickets from Abu Dhabi.
