What the Abu Dhabi city tour covers

Abu Dhabi is the capital of the UAE and it feels different from Dubai. It is calmer, greener along the water and built around a handful of big landmarks that each tell part of the country's story: faith at the Grand Mosque, government at Qasr Al Watan, culture on Saadiyat Island, the old town at the Heritage Village and the new leisure city on Yas Island. A city tour strings these together in one day with a driver who knows where to park, when the crowds come and how long each stop really takes.

Most of our guests are hosts with family visiting from abroad, residents who have never had a free day to see their own city properly, and visitors who land in Dubai and want one well-planned day in the capital. The tour suits all three because pickup, timing and entry are handled for you.

Here is what each stop is and what you actually do there. Free stops cost nothing to enter. Paid stops are added only if you choose them, and we price them in your quote.

The stops on an Abu Dhabi city tour, what they are and roughly how long we spend at each. Times are a guide and depend on the day.

  1. 01

    Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is the stop nobody skips. It opened in 2007 and holds more than 40,000 worshippers. The building is faced in white marble with flowers inlaid in coloured stone, and the courtyard is one of the largest marble mosaics anywhere. Inside the main prayer hall is a carpet made by hand by around 1,300 artisans, and above it hang chandeliers made with crystals and gold plating. Guides explain how styles from across the Islamic world were brought together in one design, and why the mosque was built as a place for visitors of every faith to come and look.

  2. 02

    The Corniche

The Corniche is the city's front garden. It runs for about eight kilometres along the water with cycle paths, lawns, children's play areas and a public beach. From the car you see the towers on one side and the sea on the other. We usually stop at a viewpoint where Emirates Palace, Etihad Towers and the sea fit into one photo. In the cooler months many guests ask for an extra 20 minutes here to walk.

  3. 03

    Emirates Palace and Etihad Towers

Emirates Palace is a large hotel with domes and gardens that looks like a palace from the road, and the five Etihad Towers stand across the street. Most tours stop outside for photos.

  4. 04

    Qasr Al Watan

Qasr Al Watan, the Palace of the Nation, sits at the far end of the Corniche next to Emirates Palace. It is still a working presidential palace, and visitors have been allowed in since 2019. The Great Hall under the main dome is the room most people remember, with carved white and gold detail rising to the top of the dome. The palace library, the House of Knowledge, holds old manuscripts, and there are rooms where heads of state meet.

  5. 05

    Louvre Abu Dhabi

Louvre Abu Dhabi opened in 2017 on Saadiyat Island, about 15 minutes' drive from the Corniche. The French architect Jean Nouvel designed the dome, which is made of layered metal patterns so that sunlight falls through it in small spots, like light through palm leaves. The galleries follow human history in order, putting objects from different parts of the world side by side. Even if you do not go in, the outside of the building and the walkway by the water are worth a short stop.

  6. 06

    Heritage Village

The Heritage Village is on the Breakwater near Marina Mall, opposite the Corniche. It shows how people lived on the coast before oil: houses made of palm fronds, a falaj water channel, fishing boats, a small museum and craftspeople weaving and making pottery on some days.

  7. 07

    Yas Island

Yas Island is about 30 minutes from the city centre and is where Abu Dhabi does theme parks and motorsport. From the road you see the red roof of Ferrari World, the Yas Marina Circuit that hosts the Formula 1 race in late November or December, and the marina. On a city tour it is usually a drive-past or the end point of the day, with a drop-off at a park if you have added tickets.

02

Half-day or full-day city tour

The half day is the usual choice for visitors on a short stay, for families with small children and for anyone who wants an afternoon free. The full day suits first-time visitors who want to see the inside of Qasr Al Watan or the Louvre and do not want to come back for a second day. Here are sample plans.

  1. 01

8:30 am: pickup in Abu Dhabi

The driver collects you from your home or hotel.

  2. 02

9:00 am: Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

Security check, dress check, then about an hour walking the courtyard and the main prayer hall with your guide.

  3. 03

    10:30 am: the Corniche

A slow drive along the seafront with a photo stop at the western end.

  4. 04

11:00 am: Emirates Palace and Etihad Towers

Photo stop outside the palace hotel, with the towers behind.

  5. 05

    11:30 am: Heritage Village

A short walk through the old village on the Breakwater, with views back to the skyline.

A full day starts the same way and adds the paid sights and a meal. It is long, so we keep the pace easy and build in a break.

  1. 01

    8:30 am: pickup

From your home or hotel in Abu Dhabi. Dubai pickups start earlier; see the Dubai section below.

  2. 02

9:00 am: Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

About an hour inside with your guide.

  3. 03

    10:45 am: Qasr Al Watan

The Great Hall, the House of Knowledge and the gardens. About 90 minutes.

  4. 04

12:30 pm: the Corniche and Emirates Palace

    Photo stops along the water.

  5. 05

    1:15 pm: lunch

A restaurant stop in the city.

  6. 06

    2:30 pm: Heritage Village

A short walk on the Breakwater.

  7. 07

    3:30 pm: Louvre Abu Dhabi

A photo stop at the dome, or 90 minutes inside if you have added the ticket.

Half day and full day compared. We confirm the stops and hours for your date in writing.

Morning tours work better from April to October, when the middle of the day is hot. In summer, temperatures go well above 40°C, so we keep outdoor stops short and spend more time inside the mosque, the palace and the museum, which are all air conditioned. From November to March the weather is mild and a full day outside is comfortable. These are also the busiest months, so book a week or two ahead, and earlier around the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix weekend and the December holidays.

During Ramadan the mosque and most sights stay open but hours change, and eating and drinking in public in daylight should be avoided. A tour that ends near sunset can be a good way to see the city lit up for iftar.

03

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque: dress code and visiting rules

The mosque welcomes visitors of every faith and charges nothing to enter. It is still a working mosque, so there are clear rules, and the guards at the entrance check every visitor.

Checklist

  • Women: a loose, long-sleeved top and a long skirt or loose trousers to the ankles, plus a headscarf that covers the hair
  • Men: long trousers and a shirt or T-shirt with sleeves; no shorts or sleeveless tops
  • Nothing see-through, tight or short, and no beachwear
  • Shoes you can slip off easily, as they come off before the prayer halls
  • Prayer times: visits pause in some areas during the five daily prayers, so your guide times the walk around them.
  • Behaviour: speak quietly, do not touch the Quran stands, and avoid holding hands or hugging in the prayer areas.
  • Photos: allowed in most public areas; ask your guide where not to point the camera, and do not photograph people praying.
  • Food and drink: not allowed inside the mosque buildings.

If you bring visitors from abroad, send them the dress code before they pack. A long, loose cotton dress or a pair of linen trousers and a long-sleeved shirt is easier than anything borrowed at the door.

Late afternoon is the time photographers ask for. The low sun turns the white marble gold, and when the lights come on after sunset the reflecting pools glow. A tour that ends at the mosque near sunset is possible on a private car. On a shared morning tour the mosque comes first, when it is cooler and quieter.

04

Adding Louvre Abu Dhabi, Qasr Al Watan or Ferrari World

The free sights fill a half day. If you want to go inside the palace or the museum, or end the day at a theme park, we add the tickets to the tour and book the time slots for you. Ticket prices change with the date and with offers, so every add-on is priced in your written quote. You can also book theme park entry on its own through our yas island tickets page, and other attractions through our uae attraction tickets page.

Add-ons to the Abu Dhabi city tour. Prices are per person, dated and confirmed in writing before you pay.

Qasr Al Watan suits guests who want to understand how the country is run and see some of the finest interiors in the Gulf. The palace asks for modest dress too: shoulders and knees covered.

Louvre Abu Dhabi suits art lovers and families with older children. The galleries are laid out as one long walk through world history, so even a 90-minute visit feels complete. Under the dome, the light shifts through the day, which makes the outside walkway good for photos at any hour.

Ferrari World and Warner Bros. World suit families with children and teenagers. The usual plan is the Grand Mosque and the city in the morning, then a drop-off at Yas Island after lunch, with the rest of the day in the park. A park takes most of a day on its own, so we do not try to fit the palace and the Louvre in as well. If you want both culture and rides, we suggest two days: the city tour on one, Yas on the other.

05

Private car or shared tour

A shared tour puts you in a vehicle with other guests on a fixed route and a fixed timetable. It is the lower price per person and works well for couples and solo travellers.

Shared and private Abu Dhabi city tours compared.

A private car also lets you add stops that shared tours rarely reach. These are the ones guests ask for most.

  • Qasr Al Hosn: the oldest stone building in the city, a white fort that was once the ruler's home, with a museum on how Abu Dhabi grew.
  • The Observation Deck at 300 in Etihad Towers: views over the Corniche, Emirates Palace and the sea from high up. Paid entry.
  • Mangrove National Park: a boardwalk or a kayak trip through the mangroves on the eastern side of the island, most pleasant in the cooler months.
  • Mina Zayed: the port area with the date market, fish market and plant souk, for a look at the everyday city.
  • Saadiyat Beach: a long public beach near the Louvre, good for a swim stop with children.
  • Abu Dhabi Cultural Foundation: next to Qasr Al Hosn, with exhibitions and a library.

For a group of four or more, a private car often costs little more per person than four shared seats, and the day is easier. With children or older parents, the freedom to stop for a rest or a toilet break without holding up strangers matters more than it sounds. Families planning a longer stay can look at our family holiday packages for ideas on the rest of the week.

Ask for the guide language when you book. A shared tour usually runs in English.

06

City tour from Dubai: pickup and drive time

Abu Dhabi is an easy day out from Dubai. The drive along Sheikh Zayed Road and the E11 takes about 90 minutes to two hours each way, depending on where in Dubai you start and the traffic. That adds around three hours of driving to the day, so a tour from Dubai is a full day even for the half-day sights.

Dubai skyline and Sheikh Zayed Road interchanges, where pickups for the drive to Abu Dhabi begin
  1. 01

7:00 to 7:30 am: pickup in Dubai

    From your hotel or home.

  2. 02

9:00 am: arrive in Abu Dhabi

Straight to Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, which sits near the entrance to the city from Dubai.

  3. 03

Late morning and afternoon: city sights

The Corniche, Emirates Palace, Heritage Village and any paid stops you choose.

  4. 04

Afternoon: Yas Island on the way back

Yas Island is on the road back to Dubai, so a drive-past or a park drop-off fits naturally at the end.

The Abu Dhabi city tour from Dubai price is higher than a pickup inside Abu Dhabi, because of the extra driving. Shared tours from Dubai cost less per person than a private car, but they collect guests from several hotels first. For a family, a private car from Dubai is often the easier day: you leave when you are ready and come back without waiting for others.

Living in Abu Dhabi and want to see Dubai instead? That is a different trip, covered on our Dubai city tour page.

The hop-on hop-off city tour bus compared with a guided city tour.

The city tour bus suits people who like to wander and do not mind waiting for the next bus. A guided tour with a driver suits families, older guests and short stays, because pickup, timing and mosque entry are handled for you. In summer the difference grows: waiting at a bus stop at noon in July is hard work. We book the guided option and can advise you on both.

08

Abu Dhabi city tour package price

The price of an Abu Dhabi city tour depends on five things: half day or full day, shared or private, where you are picked up, which paid tickets you add, and whether lunch is included. Two tours that list the same landmarks can cost very different amounts, and the difference is usually in what is left out. We show every part separately so you can compare.

Abu Dhabi city tour prices. Dated, and confirmed in writing before you pay.

A fair city tour price should already cover the vehicle, the driver and guide, fuel, parking, road tolls and drinking water. Legitimate extras are paid entry tickets you choose, meals, personal shopping and tips. If a quote does not say whether tickets and lunch are inside the price, ask before you pay.

Checklist

  • Which entry tickets are included, and which are paid on the day
  • Pickup zone and the exact pickup window for your address
  • Vehicle type and the maximum group size on a shared tour
  • Guide language, and whether the guide comes inside the paid sights
  • Minutes at each stop, not just the list of stops
  • Whether lunch is included or paid by you
  • Finish time and drop-off point
  • Cancellation terms and payment method
