Oman trips from the UAE: day trips, weekends and longer tours
Oman is the closest foreign holiday most UAE residents can take, and it feels very different: fjords and fishing villages in Musandam, a calm capital with mountains behind it in Muscat, and green monsoon hills in Salalah while the Gulf is at its hottest. You can drive to Musandam and Muscat, or fly to either city in about an hour or two.
- 01
Day trip: Musandam
A long day out from Dubai: drive to Khasab or Dibba, a few hours on a dhow in the fjords with swimming and dolphins, and back for dinner. From Abu Dhabi, add a night so the drive is not all in one day.
- 02
Weekend: Muscat
Two or three nights for the Grand Mosque, Muttrah Souq and the Corniche, with a wadi or a fort on the last day. By road from Dubai or Al Ain, or a one-hour flight from Abu Dhabi.
- 03
Longer: Salalah and the interior
Three or four nights in Salalah for the khareef, beaches and frankincense sites, or five nights combining Muscat, Nizwa, Jebel Akhdar and the Wahiba Sands.
Oman fits the UAE calendar well. Musandam and Muscat work for a normal weekend, and Salalah is the classic Eid al-Adha and summer escape. Over the winter long weekends, Oman is one of the trips we book most for families who want a change without a long flight; see our National Day holiday packages for dates. To ask about any trip type, WhatsApp +971 54 525 6521 with your dates and where you are starting from.

Prices for Musandam, Muscat and Salalah trips
Prices depend on how you travel, the hotel grade and the season. Salalah costs most in July and August, when Gulf visitors fill the hotels for the khareef. Muscat costs most over UAE long weekends and in the cooler months from November to March.

Families and groups of four or more often save by taking a private car for the Muscat road trip, because the cost is shared.

Musandam and Khasab dhow day trip: what the day looks like
Musandam is the Omani peninsula at the tip of the Strait of Hormuz, cut off from the rest of Oman by the UAE. Its mountains drop straight into the sea, forming inlets often called the fjords of Arabia. You see them from a dhow, a traditional wooden boat with carpets and cushions on deck.
- 01
Early morning: pickup
The drive to Khasab passes through Ras Al Khaimah to the border.
- 02
Mid-morning: the border
Passports are checked on both sides.
- 03
Late morning: board the dhow
The dhow sails into Khor Ash Sham, the longest of the inlets, past cliffs and small fishing villages reached only by boat. Dolphins often swim alongside in the morning.
- 04
Midday: Telegraph Island and swimming
A stop near Telegraph Island, where the British ran a cable station in the 1860s, for swimming and snorkelling in clear water. Lunch is served on board.
- Bring your passport, Emirates ID, swimwear, a towel, sun cream and a hat
- The sea is calmest from October to May; summer days are very hot on deck
Want the Musandam day trip? WhatsApp us your date and the number of adults and children, and we confirm the pickup point and the border documents for each passport.
04
Muscat in two or three nights: itinerary
Muscat is quiet, clean and spread along the coast between the mountains and the sea. Two nights covers the city; a third adds a wadi, a fort or the mountains.

- 01
Day 1: Arrive and the Corniche
Arrive by road in the early afternoon or on a morning flight. Walk the Muttrah Corniche at sunset, past the dhows and the fish market, then into Muttrah Souq for frankincense, silver and dates.
- 02
Day 2: The city
Then Old Muscat: Al Alam Palace, the Al Jalali and Al Mirani forts on the harbour, and the Bait Al Zubair or National Museum. Evening at the Royal Opera House area or a beach restaurant.
- 03
Day 3: Wadi or fort, then home
Choose the coast road south to the Bimmah Sinkhole and a swim in Wadi Shab or Wadi Tiwi, or head inland to Nakhal Fort, built against a rock outcrop among palm groves. Drive or fly home in the late afternoon.
With more time, stay a night at Jebel Akhdar, the Green Mountain, about two hours from Muscat, where terraced villages grow roses and pomegranates and the air is cool in summer. Or drive to Ras al Jinz on the eastern tip, where green turtles nest on the beach at night, and to the Wahiba Sands for a desert camp. Nizwa, with its fort and Friday cattle market, is an easy day from Muscat or Jebel Akhdar.
Ready to plan a Muscat weekend? Send your dates on WhatsApp and say whether you prefer to drive, be driven or fly. We can also book just the hotel booking part if you are driving yourself.
05
Salalah in the khareef season
Salalah, in the Dhofar region in the far south of Oman, catches the edge of the Indian Ocean monsoon. From roughly late June to early September, mist and light rain turn the hills green, waterfalls run and the temperature stays far below the Gulf summer.

- 01
Wadi Darbat
A valley with a lake, seasonal waterfalls and caves, with pedal boats in the khareef. The most popular stop on every Salalah tour.
- 02
Ayn Razat and the springs
Spring-fed pools and gardens east of the city, with Ayn Athum and Ayn Khor nearby. At their fullest after the rains.
- 03
Al Mughsail and Marneef Cave
A long beach west of Salalah, with blowholes in the rocks that spray seawater high into the air, and the Marneef Cave headland with a boardwalk.
- 04
Jebel Samhan and the east
Mountain viewpoints over Dhofar, the Tawi Attair sinkhole, baobab trees, the Anti-Gravity Point, Mirbat Castle and the old frankincense port of Sumhuram.
- 05
Salalah city
Al Baleed and the Museum of the Frankincense Land, Al Haffa Souq for frankincense and perfumes, the Nabi Imran tomb, and coconut and banana farms selling fresh juice by the road.
Outside the khareef, from October to March, Salalah is dry, warm and quieter, with clear water at the beaches and lower hotel prices. The hills are brown rather than green, but the coast and the frankincense sites are easy to tour in the mild weather. Ask us on WhatsApp for Salalah dates and we send both seasons' prices.

By road or by air: border crossing, flights and drive times
Musandam and Muscat are both reachable by road from the UAE, and Muscat and Salalah by short flights. Driving is cheaper for families and lets you stop on the way; flying saves a long day.

Oman as a couples' getaway close to home
For couples, Oman is the quiet, close alternative to a long-haul break. There is no jet lag, no long flight and very little to plan, and the hotels are some of the most peaceful in the region.

- 01
Jebel Akhdar
A mountain resort at about 2,000 m, with cliff-edge views, cool nights and village walks among the terraces. One or two nights, often combined with Muscat.
- 02
A Muscat beach hotel
Sea-view rooms, a private beach and the city ten to twenty minutes away. Easy by road for a two-night anniversary weekend.
- 03
Musandam overnight
- 04
Salalah in the khareef
Mist, green hills and beach cafes in the middle of summer. Good for couples escaping the heat for a few days.
For a longer trip further away, see our honeymoon packages, or for something short but completely different, our Kazakhstan tour package for Almaty and the mountains. More short ideas are on our weekend trips from Dubai page.

Salalah packages are priced by season, so ask for your dates.
Can I do an Oman day trip from Dubai or Abu Dhabi?
Yes, a Musandam day trip is the usual Oman day trip from the UAE: a road transfer to Khasab or Dibba, a few hours on a dhow in the fjords with swimming and snorkelling, then the drive back. From Abu Dhabi it makes a long day, so an overnight stay helps.

. Our visa team checks your case first.
How long is the flight from Abu Dhabi to Oman?
.
When is the right time to visit Salalah?
Salalah is at its greenest in the khareef monsoon season, roughly late June to early September, when mist and light rain cover the Dhofar hills. That is also the busiest time. October to March brings clear beaches and warm days for a quieter trip.
Is Oman a good romantic getaway from the UAE?
Oman suits couples who want a short, quiet break without a long flight. A night at a mountain resort in Jebel Akhdar or a beach hotel in Muscat is an easy weekend by road or a one-hour flight. We add private transfers and room upgrades where hotels offer them.
