Who needs travel insurance
Some people must have it, and everyone travelling should think hard before going without it. A short hospital stay abroad can cost more than the whole holiday, and a cancelled flight close to departure can mean paying twice for hotels.
Schengen visa applicants
- Required?
- Yes
- Why
- The embassy will not accept a file without a compliant policy
Visitors coming to the UAE on a visit visa
- Required?
- Ask us
- Why
- Hospital treatment without cover is expensive
Travellers to some other countries
- Required?
- Ask us
- Why
- Some entry rules ask for proof of medical cover
UK, US and Canada visitors
- Required?
- Not for the visa
- Why
- Medical bills in these countries are among the highest anywhere
Families and older travellers
- Required?
- No, but strongly advised
- Why
- More people means more chance of a claim; age affects cover and price
Short GCC and Georgia trips
- Required?
- No, but advised
- Why
- Cheap to add and covers delays, baggage and emergencies
When insurance is required, and when it is simply sensible.

02
Schengen visa travel insurance from the UAE
The Schengen rules set a clear minimum, and the visa centre checks it. If one point is missing, the file can be returned or refused. We check each point against your flight reservation and hotel bookings before we issue the certificate.
Checklist
- Medical cover of at least 30,000 euros
- Valid in every Schengen country, not only the one you apply to
- Covers every day of the trip, from departure to return
- Includes emergency medical evacuation and repatriation
- Each traveller named on the certificate, with passport numbers matching
Add a day or two either side of your dates if you are unsure of the return flight; the embassy may refuse a policy that ends before the trip does.

03
Insurance for UAE visit visa holders
When parents, relatives or friends come to stay with you in Abu Dhabi or Dubai, they are not covered by your employer's health insurance. A visitor policy covers emergency treatment during their stay.
- We can add the policy when we apply for the UAE visit visa, so both start on the same day
- Keep the policy number and the insurer's emergency line on the visitor's phone

04
Single-trip, annual, family and holiday insurance
Most travellers fit one of five plans. We quote the ones that suit your trips and show them side by side, so you compare cover and price together.

Annual plans usually cost less than buying single trips if you travel three or more times a year, but each trip has a maximum length, often 30 to 90 days. Holiday packages can include a single-trip policy; ask when you book one of our holiday packages from Abu Dhabi.
05
What a policy should cover
Read the schedule, not only the headline. These are the parts that matter most when something goes wrong.
Checklist
- Emergency medical treatment and hospital stays, with a limit that suits the country
- Medical evacuation and repatriation to the UAE or your home country
- Trip cancellation and cutting a trip short for covered reasons, such as illness
- Travel delay and missed connections
- Lost, delayed or damaged baggage, with a limit per item
- Personal liability if you accidentally injure someone or damage property

06
What policies usually exclude
Every policy has exclusions. These are the common ones; the policy wording is what counts, and we point out the exclusions before you buy.
- Medical conditions you had before buying and did not declare
- Skiing, diving, trekking at altitude and other risky activities unless added
- Trips to places under official advice against travel
- Items left unattended, or valuables in checked baggage
- Claims without receipts, medical reports or a police report for theft
- Cancelling because you changed your mind
- Incidents linked to alcohol or not following local law
Planning a ski week in Switzerland or Georgia? Ask for winter sports cover when we quote.

07
Travel insurance cost in the UAE
Price depends on age, destination, trip length and cover level. A short Schengen trip for one adult is at the lower end; a family worldwide plan with the USA, or cover for travellers over 65, costs more.
Destination
- Effect on price
- Plans including the USA and Canada cost more
Trip length
- Effect on price
- Longer trips cost more; annual plans can be cheaper for frequent travellers
Age
- Effect on price
- Ask us
Cover level
- Effect on price
- Higher medical and cancellation limits cost more
Excess
- Effect on price
- A lower excess means a higher premium
Extras
- Effect on price
- Winter sports, adventure activities and gadget cover add to the price
What affects the price, dated 7 November 2026.
| Factor | Effect on price |
|---|---|
| Destination | Plans including the USA and Canada cost more |
| Trip length | Longer trips cost more; annual plans can be cheaper for frequent travellers |
| Age | Ask us |
| Cover level | Higher medical and cancellation limits cost more |
| Excess | A lower excess means a higher premium |
| Extras | Winter sports, adventure activities and gadget cover add to the price |
Cheap travel insurance in the UAE can be good enough if it meets the visa rules and has sensible limits. The risk is a low limit or a high excess you only notice when you claim.
08
How to make a claim

- 01
Call the emergency line first
For any hospital visit, call the insurer's assistance number before or as soon as you can; some treatment needs approval.
- 02
Keep every paper
Medical reports, receipts, boarding passes, airline delay letters and baggage reports. Take photos as backup.
- 03
Report theft to the police
Get a written report within the time the policy sets.
- 04
Ask us to help
We can help you fill the form and chase the insurer, but the insurer decides the claim.
09
Buying insurance with your visa or holiday
Buying the policy with the rest of the trip means one set of dates and names across the visa file, tickets and insurance. A Georgia tour package for Tbilisi and Kazbegi, for example, can include a single-trip policy with the hotel and transfers.

- 01
Ask for a quote
Send dates, destination, ages and any medical conditions on WhatsApp or at Mushrif Mall.
- 02
Choose the plan
We send two or three options with limits, excess and price side by side.
- 03
Give the details
Names and passport numbers exactly as in the passports.
- 04
Get the policy by email
Certificate and policy wording sent to you; we print a copy for the visa file.
Need tickets too? Our flight tickets from Abu Dhabi desk can book the flights and add the policy in one quote. Questions about a policy you hold? Contact our consultants.
What travel insurance do I need for a Schengen visa?
Schengen rules ask for medical cover of at least 30,000 euros, valid in every Schengen country for every day of your trip, including emergency repatriation. The policy certificate goes into your visa file. .
How much does travel insurance cost in the UAE?
The cost depends on your age, the destination, how many days you travel and the cover level. A short Schengen policy for one adult costs far less than annual family cover with USA included.
Do visitors to the UAE need travel insurance?
Visitors on a UAE visit visa should have health cover for their stay, and some visa types require it. Hospital treatment in the UAE without insurance is expensive. .
Is annual travel insurance worth it for UAE residents?
If you travel three or more times a year, an annual multi-trip policy usually costs less than buying single-trip cover each time, and you do not need to remember to buy it. Check the maximum length of each trip it allows, often 30 to 90 days.
What is usually not covered by travel insurance?
Common exclusions are pre-existing medical conditions you did not declare, risky sports unless added, trips taken against official travel advice, lost items left unattended, and claims without receipts or police reports. Read the policy wording, and ask us to point out the exclusions before you buy.
Is cheap travel insurance in the UAE good enough?
It can be, if it meets your visa rules and covers medical costs, repatriation and cancellation at sensible limits. The risk with the cheapest policies is low limits and high excess.
